Collections to help Ukrainian refugees in Poland have had to be suspended at 51³Ô¹Ïapp due to the overwhelming generosity of students, staff and members of the public.
At the same time a call has been made for volunteers to come forward and help clear the massive backlog of goods which has been amassed in the four days since the appeal was first made.
Once the current donations have been sorted and gifted, the appeal for goods will be able to start again.
51³Ô¹Ïapp Local is asking volunteers to meet at the 51³Ô¹Ïapp Centre tomorrow, Wednesday 9 March, at 9am to start sifting through the donations.
They will then be boxed up and collected in 51³Ô¹Ïapp vans for delivery to the Polish Community Centre in Loughborough.
An appeal is also being made to help sort through the huge numbers of donations which have arrived at the East Street sorting centre which was set up by 51³Ô¹Ïapp students.
Fi Donovan, of 51³Ô¹Ïapp Local, said: “I want to thank everyone who has been so generous with gifts but we have been absolutely inundated at the 51³Ô¹Ïapp Centre and at the sorting room in East Street.
“We desperately need volunteers to help sift through all the donations to help clear the backlog and then we can start collecting again.”
If you are able to volunteer to sort through donations at 51³Ô¹Ïapp you can turn up at the 51³Ô¹Ïapp Centre from 9am. The sorting centre will be open from 12pm-7pm every day. It is located at East St, Leicester LE1 6NB (around the back of East Street Lanes bowling and next to The Y Theatre).
Send an email to local@dmu.ac.uk to let the team know you want to help at East Street and an email will go out each day after 11am telling you which time slots need filling.
