Postgraduate research

We welcome applications from potential candidates who are interested in similar or related themes to those outlined on below.

MSc Textile Design, Technology and Innovation

Our highly flexible MSc course is ideal for students wishing to develop their textile understanding and prepare themselves for a career, to diversify, or expand their existing skill set to work within the textile and related industries.

Our course is suitable for those from technical, manufacturing, scientific and creative backgrounds and can be studied full time or part time alongside existing work commitments.

The course brings together technology, design and product development into a diverse learning environment, bridging the gap between design and technical understanding.

Students expand their knowledge across a number of areas including textile technology and innovation, material assessment for performance and longevity, garment and product technology, performance apparel and sportswear innovation, material chemistry, material construction, innovative technologies, sustainable and ethical practices and the circular economy.

Graduates from our MSc either go straight into their chosen career or may choose to expand their research further choosing to study a PhD without the research group.

MPhil/PhD Research

Students may wish to develop their research skills within a specific area by undertaking a MPhil/PhD within the TEAM research group. Entrants may join with appropriate industry experience, undergraduate or post-graduate qualifications.

The TEAM research group has extensive textile testing, material processing and innovation and product development facilities to enable to MA/MSc and MPhil/PhD research students to focus on a diverse range of topics that align to the research interests of the group.

Facilities include material performance and analysis within our textile testing laboratories, fibre processing, chemical treatments, colouration and mechanical evaluation within our testing and chemistry laboratories, material, garment and product development using our extensive design and manufacturing studios.

In addition, we work closely with other departments and facilities outside of the school of fashion and textiles enabling students to focus on interdisciplinary products utilising computing technology, microbiology, chemistry, to name a few. Supervisory support is provided by subject specialists from across the School and supported by a wider network of advisors.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees can be pursued either by full-time or part-time research in the University or jointly supervised from a research base elsewhere where the student has access to other facilities and support. In this case they are encouraged to spend some time each year at the University.

Key research areas:

  • Textile processing
  • Sustainable fashion and textiles
  • Functional materials and finishes
  • Innovative technologies for textile production
  • Textile biotechnology
  • Textile innovation
  • Nanotechnology
  • Recycle and reuse of textile materials
  • Future textiles
