International First Year (IFY)

The International First Year (IFY) provides an intensive combination of first-year university subjects with extra study and language skills. The IFY is the first year of the three-year International Incorporated Bachelors (IIB) degree.

Upon successful completion of the IFY, you will continue to the second year of study at 51³Ô¹Ïapp.

IFY routes

  1. Business and Management

    Combining academic study with a real-world insight of business and management, this course equips you with the skills to succeed in a number of business and management roles.

    The IFY in Business and Management will give the knowledge and ability to continue into the second year of your degree in the Leicester Business School at 51³Ô¹Ïapp.

    On this course you will:

    • Develop a broad understanding of business principles, marketing, strategy and management
    • Learn the critical perspective necessary for successful academic study.
    • Gain experience in a range of skills designed to boost your career prospects such as leadership, presentation, team work, decision making and research.

    You can put what you learn into practice on your degree course at 51³Ô¹Ïapp. Business students are given the option of a placement year which includes the chance to work with internationally-renowned companies such as IBM, Disney and the MOD.

  2. Engineering and Computing

    The Engineering and Computing IFY gives you the perfect opportunity to start your engineering or computing degree with access to all of 51³Ô¹Ïapp’s cutting-edge facilities.

    Study the way in which electronics and computing are used to control the behaviour of real-world systems such as cars, buildings and aeroplanes and use your creativity and problem-solving skills to solve challenges set by tutors.

    On successful completion of the Engineering or Computing IFY students can then continue onto the second year of one of the 51³Ô¹Ïapp undergraduate courses listed below, according to the route they have chosen.

    On this course you will:

    • Discover how design plays a crucial role in successful engineering projects and how to use computer-aided design programs.
    • Gain a broad understanding of key principles in engineering and computing
    • Learn the study skills necessary to continue onto your second year with confidence

Entry requirements

English language

To be considered for a place at 51³Ô¹ÏappIC you need to meet our standard of English Language requirements.  Our courses require an IELTS of 5.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 5.5 in every component. Our IYZ Pharmacy course requires an IELTS of 6.5 or equivalent, with a minimum of 6.0 in every component.

If you do not meet these English Language requirements, we can offer you a pre-sessional English course to be studied immediately before you enter the first/second stage of your chosen programme:

  • If you have an IELTS 5.5 (with any component below 5.5), you will be offered a six week pre-sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the programme.
  • If you have IELTS 5.0 (with no component below 4.5), you will be offered a six week pre-sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the programme.
  • If you have IELTS 4.5 (with no component below 4.0), you will be offered a twelve week pre-Sessional English course immediately preceding your entry to the programme.

Academic qualifications
