The power of student voice; how your feedback has helped us shape student experience at 51³Ô¹Ïapp

Student feedback is integral to the way we determine the need for change at 51³Ô¹Ïapp. Across the university, in faculties, and in services that support you, your insight has created improvements for yourself and other students – present and future.

Feeding back to your faculty

Your faculty plays a key role in your time at 51³Ô¹Ïapp. It’s the subject area your course is placed in, the group which you’ll graduate with, and where faculty leadership will shape the student experience for you and your class mates. Within each faculty, there are a large number of examples of how student feedback has been crucial to improving student experience at the university.

Arts, Design, and Humanities (ADH)

Feedback has helped shape the curriculum and the way tutors teach in courses within ADH.

Fashion Design students asked to have a better understanding of how the academic year was structured, and what to expect on their course. The teaching staff on the course presented the full curriculum to them, and asked for feedback. This feedback was then implemented so every student knew what to expect through the academic year.

Fine Art students wanted more opportunity to develop practical skills during their course. Teaching staff redesigned the way that students are taught to include more staff-led practical sessions.

Computing, Engineering, and Media (CEM)

For CEM, access to specific pieces of software, and lab equipment has been essential to student experience in the faculty.

For Artificial Intelligence students, access to CUDA, an essential piece of software for the course, in the Greenhouse was previously limited. After receiving this feedback, academic staff ensured that CUDA was installed on all of the devices in the Greenhouse to enable students to work at any time.

Computer Networks students wanted to hear more from industry professional throughout their course to get a better understanding of current trends, and to discover real-world applications for their course. Staff organised a series of guest lectures from both industry professionals and academic staff to further student knowledge and understanding.

Health and Life Sciences (HLS)

HLS students wanted a variety of changes to their courses to help further their understanding.

Education students wanted lecture sessions to be followed by specific workshops to help contextualise and further understanding. Following this feedback, teaching staff timetabled in these sessions to help students get more from their course.

For Social Work students, placements are an essential part of the course. Student feedback was that there wasn’t enough time preparing for these within the curriculum. To reflect this, staff increased the time spent on preparation sessions for placements during years two and three.

Business and Law (BAL)

BAL students have also supported a better student experience on their course by sharing feedback. Accounting and Business Management students found that some slides used in lectures by their tutors had too much information on them, and were overwhelming. Following this feedback, staff revised the slides to focus on the key points, making them more accessible.

Economics students wanted more opportunities to use, and gain certifications in industry-relevant tools during their course. Teachers created teaching sessions to cover Bloomberg, RStudio, and LSEG certifications to help students after they graduate.

Changes across campus

As well as changes in your faculty, student feedback has also helped improve services across campus to help enrich your student experience.

Block learning has revolutionised the student experience at 51³Ô¹Ïapp. We started looking at block as a response to student feedback. Before it was implemented, students found that they found it difficult to fully immerse on a single topic because they were balancing their study across several modules. With block, students are now able to focus on a single topic at a time, and fully immerse in the learning experience.

Student feedback has helped contribute to 51³Ô¹Ïapp having best careers support of any UK university according to Target Jobs. Students told the careers team that access to a variety of work experience opportunities was really important to them. The careers team listened, and now source a wider range of opportunities, including shorter summer placements.
