Year one

Block 1: Contemporary Issues in Microeconomics

This module will introduce you to the basics in economics, focusing on how people deal with limited resources or scarcity and make choices. Exchange and trade-offs will be used to understand how individuals, businesses, and governments decide what to buy, sell and produce, exploring a variety of contemporary issues in the modern economy. 

Block 2: Quantitative Methods for Business Economics

Students will use key mathematical and statistical techniques to solve and understand business and economics problems. This module will add essential skills for interpreting economic models and real-world data.

Block 3: Macroeconomics for Business

This module introduces students to mainstream macroeconomics, including national income, growth and inflation. Students grasp how large-scale economic factors impact businesses and society.

Block 4: The History of Business and Economics

Students gain perspective of how past ideas and events shape current economic debates and policies. Explore the evolution of economic thought and the implications for business practices. Students will have a sense of the richness of debates and how they relate to contemporary issues.

Year two

Block 1: Macroeconomics Analysis and Policy

A deeper dive into macroeconomics, focusing on policy-making and analysis. The content focuses on building students’ skills to think strategically about national and international economic policies.

Block 2: Microeconomics: Ethics, Policy and Practice

This module expands your knowledge of microeconomics, with a focus on ethical considerations and practical applications. Students will enhance their ability to address economic problems and develop written and oral communication skills to inform solutions effectively.

Block 3: Data Modelling and Analytics

This module offers a deep learning into the realm of data analysis and visualisation, exploring a wide range of tools in MS Excel. A career in Economics or the private sector requires technical experience in using spreadsheets for economic and business models.

Block 4: Contemporary Issues in Global Business

Students examine how businesses adapt to external environmental challenges and internal market competition. The module expands your understanding of the dynamics of operating a business in the global market.

Year three

Block 1: Advanced Business Economics

This module integrates economic and business theories to make effective decisions in a business context, preparing students for complex decision-making in real-world business environments.

Block 2: International Economics, Sustainability and Emerging Markets

This module examines themes and concepts in development economics, sustainability and dynamics of international trade. It has been designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of various development, resource and governance environments and their impact in global business.

Block 3: Behavioural Economics

The purpose of the module is to examine human behaviour and its effects on economic decisions. Students gain insight into non-traditional economic factors such as the impact of policies and institutions on the economy, opening avenues to solve difficult business and economic problems.

Block 3: Economics Institutions and Policy

This module has been designed to provide students with the knowledge of economic institutions and the importance of public policy on social, economic and political outcomes. It will draw upon the effectiveness of economic institutions and the different theories and approaches to the concept of policymaking including the interlinks between the two.

Block 4: Applied Business Project

Students demonstrate their ability on a practical or research setting, preparing them for a professional world and future academic challenges. This module provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge of business and economics and the skills developed in their degree to develop their own business projects. Students will be able to communicate their ideas visually, verbally and in written format.

The project can take different forms; from case-study analysis to business simulation and evaluation, or a consultancy-type project. Initial thinking about topics and methods for this project will be done at level 5 in the modules ‘Data Modelling and Analytics’ and ‘Contemporary Issues in Global Business.

OR

Block 4: Economics Dissertation

The module provides an opportunity for students to undertake independent research study in an area of special interest within selected subject areas of business and economics. Students will be able to communicate their ideas visually, verbally and in written format.

The research work should use appropriate research methods in the solution of business and economic problems or in answering research questions of interest in business and economics. Initial thinking about topics and methods for this project will be done at level 5 in the module ‘Data Modelling and Analytics’.
