You are invited to find out more about antibiotic resistance at a special 51³Ô¹Ïapp event to mark European Antibiotic Awareness Day on Monday 18 November.

The free event begins with presentation of a five-year UK action plan to tackle antibiotic resistance, followed by four keynote speeches from 51³Ô¹Ïapp academics (see programme below).

The day will also include a video presentation exploring how 51³Ô¹Ïapp academics can tackle antibiotic resistance, a world antibiotic awareness quiz and the launch of the , in which students and staff will be encouraged to choose how they’ll make better use of antibiotics.

European Antibiotic Awareness Day is held in partnership with the WHO World Antibiotic Awareness Week (Monday 18 – Sunday 24 November 2019).

The event runs from 9.30am to 3pm in the 51³Ô¹Ïapp Centre conference room 2.01.

The programme for the day:

• 9.30-10am: Registration and coffee
• 10.00-10.30am: Welcome and opening address - Dr Shivanthi Samarasinghe will highlight the importance of the day and present the UK’s five-year national action plan on tackling antibiotic resistance
• 10.30am-12.30pm: Keynote speeches

1. 1. Who or what has agency in the discussion of antimicrobial resistance in UK news? - Professor Rusi Jaspal, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research
   2. Antibiotic Resistance awareness in marginalised and socially disadvantaged populations - Bertha Ochieng, Professor of Integrated Health and Social Care, School of Nursing and Midwifery
   3. Do biomedical scientists and researchers have a role to play in antibiotic resistance? - Parvez Haris, Professor of Biomedical Science, Leicester School of Allied Health Sciences
   4. Do Pharmacists have a role to play in antibiotic resistance? - Ahmed Aboo, Associate Professor in Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy

• 12.30-1.30pm: Lunch
• 1.30-2.00pm: Research showcase video: how 51³Ô¹Ïapp academics can tackle antibiotic resistance
• 2-2.30pm:
• 2.30-2.45pm: Launch of the Antibiotic Guardian pledge – Professor Rusi Jaspal
• 2.45-3pm: Closing remarks – Dr Shivanthi Samarasinghe
