As part of 51³Ô¹Ïapp Pride we invite you to take part in an, empowering dance class with a queer dose of Bollywood entertainment. It aims to encourage empowerment by breaking down gender and sexuality norms, and recognising those who exist beyond the gender binary. The class is beginner-friendly, but open to all levels, and Bollyqueer teaches variations of choreographies so that you get to choose whichever feels most at home to you. As with all Bollyqueer classes, no one is assigned any label, gender is never assumed, and no one is forced to wear clothing that doesn't align with their identity. You are, however, encouraged to dance in a way that makes your heart and body feel its happiest and to celebrate the magic and beauty of Bollywood dance without having to sacrifice your queerness or identity. So come along and have fun in a relaxed and friendly environment!
The session is hosted by Vinay, a queer and gender non-conforming artist making waves in the dance community by challenging gender norms in Bollywood dance. They are the founder of Bollyqueer, a dance class which nurtures self-expression by celebrating individual queer identities beyond the gender binary. They recently starred in the BBC Three documentary Bend It Like Bollywood, which follows their journey in introducing their dance class to their hometown, Leicester.
